St. David's Church, Cheraw, South Carolina

Cheraw is in Chesterfield County on the Great Pee Dee River. John A. Morrow writes:

In St.David's churchyard are the graves of a number of Scottish soldiers (71st Foot (Fraser's Highlanders)) who died of fevers at this post just prior to Cornwallis' victory at Camden. Some of the graves are marked.

John took these photographs in 1976.

According to Boatner's Landmarks of the American Revolution, there are about 50 soldiers buried here, victims of a smallpox outbreak. The town was the 71st's base from June 1780 until the regiment, under Major Archibald McArthur, moved to Brierly's Ferry 5 months later.

The inscription on the sign reads:

GRAVE OF BRITISH SOLDIER
WHO DIED DURING THE
REVOLUTIONARY WAR WHEN USING
ST. DAVID'S CHURCH AS A HOSPITAL
IN THE SUMMER OF 1780.

COLONEL CAMPBELL, COMMANDER
OF THE 71ST REGIMENT IS ALSO
BURIED HERE
